Had an argument with my wife about tinkerbell :(
by BU2B inone of my co workers mother made my 4 year old a blanket with the disney character tinkerbell on it.
as soon as i got it i knew trouble lay ahead.
i wanted to reason with her before my daughter saw it so as not to cause a disruption, but it didn't work out that way.

Took my JW missus to the musical 'The Book of Mormon'
by Frazzled UBM inshe was initially reluctant and found it confronting at first (particularly the strong bad language) but then she lightened up and started laughing.
i didn't try to draw any analogies but hopefully she saw some.
i must say it is very good at showing you how screwy the mormon beliefs are but actually when you think about some fo the incredible things in the bible - the notion of a third part based in the us is not so ludicrous.

The show was great fun - I would definitely recommend it. You Apostates will appreciate more than the general population I think.

Why are some of you guys calling this new arrangement tithing?
by neverendingjourney inat the risk of being shouted down, i thought i'd point out that "tithing" means giving 10 percent of your income to a church.
it comes from the old english word teogotha meaning tenth.
i've seen nothing that establishes tithing in the watchtower.. while i'm all in favor of pointing out the watchtower's lies, hypocrisies and faults, the language we use matters.

For any Australians out there of a certain age - we could call it the 'Claytons Tithe'. In Australia in the 1970s there was drink called Claytons which was non-alcoholic but tasted as if it was. The advertising line was: 'Claytons: the drink you have when your not having a drink.'

Have you noticed the common practice is to knock indivual's self esteem?
by stuckinarut2 inin another thread, one of our members made a comment that caught my attention.. i have been trying to put my finger on a practice amongst the org and witnesses in general.... as soon as someone does something well, accomplishes something, or excels at something, the atmosphere effectiveley 'kicks them in the gut' to bring them down.. anything that makes a person grow or develop is blatently discouraged and therefore self esteem is squashed!.
the constant message telling a witness to be 'humble' is designed to suck any sense of growth or 'betterment' out of a person..... therefore this leaves the average witness to be a blubbering mess of insecurity and instability completely dependant on the organization...kind of like a 'battered-wife' scenario.... .

jgnat - thanks for thinking about my wfie's situation - her family was not in crushing poverty - her father is a farmer who grows rice and rears livestock and has a small fishing boat to get fish. They are and were pretty self-sufficient. Her brother is a teacher and her sisters work overseas. Not much in the way of material possessions when she was growing up but not going hungry either. They need my help financially from time to time for rood repairs etc. and I am happy to provide it. No I really do think her closed off behaviour is a consequence of her JW conditioning but probably made worse by the impact on her self-esteem of being disfellowshipped for 5 years because of her relationship with me. She is very good at compartmentalising. Her fear of questioning authority is deep seated and I believe a direct result of being a Witness, perhaps more so from the JC experience. She is heavy on the 'being humble' teaching. I do as much as I can to build up her self-esteem by complimenting her often, particularly on her cooking, appreciating what she does for me and encouraging her to push her boundaries by showing I believe in her ability to do things. She is making progress but it is a struggle for her. Cheers Fraz

Decimation literally means to reduce by one tenth but is not used that way in common parlance. I think you can still call it 'a tithing arrangement' if conceptually it is based on the same principle even if it is not the exact same percentage. I can see your point about how the pedantic WBTS may seek to distinguish this arrangement from tithing based on the percentage amount.

Maybe you coud lighten the mood by asking your wife this: "What do you call a smelly fairy?... Stinkerbell" You are going to have to work very hard to get your wife to lighten up otherwise she is going to destroy your daughter's childhood. The cult propaganda is so insidious. My son was so relieved when I told him Spartlock was rubbish and he should not worry about anything in that ridiculous DVD.

Good for you- time to introduce your daugther to the idea that she can't believe everything that Momma says. Also good for sticking up for your child to have a childhood using imagination and fantasy rather than grim fantasy portrayed as fact. Also time fro your wife to start to uidnerstandt hat she is abusing your child by literally taking away the magic and replacing it with fear and loathing. Good luck Fraz

Wow - thanks for that list Oubliette - my wife hit most of those but especially 1, 5, 9,12,15,16 and 19 and also probably 10 and 11 but she never lets me in enough to know for sure. I always suspected her dyfunction was a product of her Witness upbringing but this confirms it. Cheers Fraz

Does the end justify the means? Maybe - I think I would be tempted to do the same in your shoes. Apostate Theocratic Warfare.

Told wife that I don't like going to the meeting
by XBEHERE infinally said it out loud even though my actions have been showing it for quite some time.
a fight ensued and now she isn't talking to me.
the wierd thing is when i just didnt go she didn't say much (she hasn't been for over 2 mos for a medical reason) but god forbid i should actually vocalize that i don't want to go... i didn't want to give her any fuel to call me an apostate so i just blamed discouragement and my dislike of the elders which she already knows.

cultBgone - A quick read of XBEHERE's other posts shows that he did the unthinkable and went back to being an elder in full knowledge of TTATT because of harassment from his missus. It is hard not to feel a touch of melancholy for XBEHERE's predicament. Like you I would be interested to her from the man himslef about how he is holding up in his predicament. Fraz
